What is the Stripping Method?

Stripping is a traditional surgical technique used to remove varicose veins. In this procedure, small incisions are made in the groin and ankle areas to surgically extract the vein with insufficient function. It is performed in an operating room under sterile conditions. Although effective, the recovery period is longer and there is a risk of complications such as bleeding, hematoma (under-skin bleeding), and nerve-related numbness or tingling.

The stripping method is particularly effective for treating large and deep varicose veins. A special wire called a “stripper” is used to remove the problematic vein through small surgical incisions.

How is Stripping Surgery Performed?

  • Preparation & Anesthesia: A preoperative vein map is created. General or spinal anesthesia is administered.
  • Incisions & Vein Removal: Small incisions are made in the groin and ankle. A stripper wire is inserted into the vein and used to extract it.
  • Closure & Bandaging: The incisions are sutured and the leg is wrapped with a compression bandage.

The surgery typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, and most patients are discharged the same day.

Advantages of the Stripping Method

  • Permanent Solution: Since varicose veins are completely removed, the risk of recurrence is low.
  • Effective Results: High success rate in the treatment of large, deep varicose veins.
  • Fast Recovery: Most patients return to their daily routines within a few days.
  • Aesthetic Appearance: Minimal scarring thanks to small incisions.
